Lisbon is the capital city of Portugal and the largest city in the country, with an estimated population of 547,000 people. The metropolitan area of Lisbon<\/a> extends well beyond the city’s administrative borders with a population of approximately 2.8 million inhabitants, making it the tenth most populous metropolis in the European Union.\u00a0< \/span><\/p>\n

With about 3 million inhabitants living in its metropolis, Lisbon, which is about 27% of the country’s population. It is the westernmost capital city of Europe, and is the only capital along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies in the west of the Iberian Peninsula on the banks of the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus River.<\/p>\n

Lisbon<\/a> is one of the oldest cities in the world , and the second oldest European capital city (after Athens). Since 1147, Lisbon has been the political, economic and cultural center of Portugal.<\/p>\n

Lisbon is recognized as a central and important city and was ranked as a global city at the Alpha level due to its importance in finance, trade, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism. Lisbon, along with Porto, is one of two Portuguese cities that is recognized as a global city. <\/span><\/p>\n

Lisbon is the political center of the country, the seat of the parliament, the government offices and the residence of the head of state.<\/p>\n

The Lisbon area is one of the largest economic centers on the continent, with a growing financial sector and one of the largest container ports on the Atlantic coast of Europe. Most of the headquarters of multinational corporations in Portugal are located in the Lisbon area.<\/p>\n

29 million passengers passed through the city’s airport in 2018 and Lisbon hosts about 4.5 million tourists a year.<\/p>\n

The Lisbon region has a GDP per capita adjusted for purchasing power (PPP) per capita higher than any other region in Portugal. Its GDP amounts to $96.3 billion, and therefore $32,434 per capita. <\/span><\/p>\n

The city of Lisbon is rich in architecture and you can find Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, modern and post-modern buildings all over the city. Lisbon is home to a number of prominent museums and art collections from all over the world. The National Museum of Ancient Art has one of the largest art collections in the world.
\nLisbon is home to Web Summit, the largest technology event in the world.
\nThe port of Lisbon is one of the busiest ports in Europe.
