History of Sacavém:
Sacavém was reguengo, land of the Crown, for some centuries, hence the economic importance of agricultural and wine activities in the region.

Tradition states that during the Middle Ages, a Shelter of lepers and pilgrims played a prominent role in Sacavém. It is known that in 1599 the plague devastated the population and as the mother church (already missing) did not arrive to bury the dead, the prior had them buried next to the Chapel of St. Andrew, where there had been a hospital of lepers and shelter of pilgrims. When the first grave was opened, a Gothic image emerged. The people immediately led her in procession to the chapel of St. Andrew, asking Our Lady of Health to deliver them from the plague. Since then the people of Sacavém have venerated Our Lady of Health and dedicate an annual feast to her on the first Sunday of September.

The earthquake of 1755 almost completely destroyed this parish, ruining the mother church, which was replaced by the Chapel of Our Lady of Health.

At this time there lived about 1,500 people, in 353 fires and little development there was until the nineteenth century. Despite the strong agricultural and commercial activity of the region (the river ended up having an important function as a way of disposal of agricultural products), the population was composed mainly of rural workers and small craftsmen. The parish was surrounded by Farms belonging to the nobility, which during the liberal struggles were passing to the bourgeoisie.

In the 19th century, important works give new impetus to the parish. The construction of The Monte Cintra Fort and the military road, integrated in the lisbon defense lines, the stone and iron bridge over the Trancão for the road that connects the Capital to Porto and the dyeing and stamping factory in Quinta das Penicheiras are factors that motivate the development of the community.

Around 1856, the Loiça Factory was founded, which, twenty-five years later, employs 400 workers. Also in 1856 the railway line was inaugurated, connecting Lisbon to Porto and passing through Sacavém. From the surroundings and the interior of the country begin to arrive people who exchange the countryside for the factory, in search of better living conditions.

However, the increase and improvement of communication routes make Sacavém a privileged place for the fixing of industries and the number of these is growing. With it the population increases and, consequently, the population transforms. It's no longer an agricultural class, but a factory. A little throughout the parish arise "Vilas Operárias", small housing centers that still maintain, in almost all, their initial functions.

Little by little, the physiognomy of Sacavém has changed: farms give way to new factories or adapt to housing.

At the end of the 19th century, the parish has more than 2000 inhabitants, of which about half are workers of the Factory of Loiça, an industry of crucial economic importance for the area.
