Santa Maria Maior is a portuguese parish in the municipality of Lisbon, which brings together the areas of the Historic Center of Lisbon, with an area of 1.49 km².
It rises around the Cathedral of Lisbon (Church of Santa Maria Maior).

Santa Maria Maior is the result of the largest merger of parishes at the national level. Adding twelve parishes that share a long common past, the parish of Santa Maria Maior is closely linked to the See of Lisbon, initially Church of Santa Maria Maior, built in 1150 by D. Afonso Henriques, three years after having conquered Lisbon from the Moors.

The first two parishes of which there is news, after the reconquest of the city, are St. Vincent and Santa Maria dos Mártires, places where the Crusaders camped and made cemeteries during the siege, hence the designation 'martyrs'.

It represents 2% of the territory of the City but 5% of the buildings, which makes it twice the density of the City, in this variable.
