This urban renewal was inspired by the Paris Extension Plan, implemented by Georges-Eugène Haussmann, which Ressano Garcia attended as a student in the French capital.With an area of 2.92 km2 and more than 23 000 inhabitants, the Parish of Avenidas Novas presents a configuration of streets that intersect perpendicularly creating square blocks. The main avenues that gave it its name start at the Rotunda do Marquês de Pombal with Eduardo VII Park and Fontes Pereira de Melo Street, passing through the Picoas roundabout and heading towards the Campo Grande Garden, avenida da Republica and its adjacent streets.From the Roman Empire to the 21st centuryThe first traces of human occupation in the territory that now belongs to Avenidas Novas date back to the 50 s.C., of which date some objects of flint and pottery discovered between Avenida 5 de Outubro and Avenida das Forces Armadas. It was through Avenida da República that the Romans made the metropolis the products created in rural areas, through a road that connected Torres Vedras to Loures and from there to Lisbon.In 1180 the Santos to Rego neighborhood was born, which derives from the expansion of the fields that surrounded it. The name Rego originates from a stream that was born in Campo Pequeno towards Palhavã and that crossed the neighborhood area.In 1755, after the earthquake followed by marmoto that struck Lisbon, many of the inhabitants of the capital, frightened by the destruction and possible replicas of the catastrophe, fled the lower part of the city, and settled in the territory that today makes up the parish of Avenidas Novas, which suffered, at the time, a huge population growth.More than a century later, in 1888, Ressano Garcia redesigned the urban structure, widening the streets and avenues, accompanying all restructuring with a strong environmental component: the planting of poplars, acacia trees from Japan, beeches, ailants, white acacia trees, among other species.There are also by this time the single-family houses, with eclectic facades, in the style Of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, occupied mainly by a middle class, upper middle class and expanding upper class.
