The name of the parish originates from the Arabic term ‘Mactamã’, which means ‘place where good water is taken’, or ‘fountain’. Situated halfway to the strong squares of Lisbon and Sintra, it was here that the ancient warriors, hunters and travelers used to stop, during their travels, to rest and to refresh themselves and their mounts.
Very fertile region, came to be considered one of the best areas of wheat production in the country, where there came to be six trees: Casal da Barota, Casal do Olival, Casal Gouveia, Casal do Josézito, Quinta de Pero Longo and Quinta do Porto. Its basement, rich in extensive water reserves, served at some point to supply the Barcarena Gunpowder Factory. The current Fountain of Massamá, considered the ex-libris of the parish (and the best known heritage), is fed by a mine located inside the Basic School No. 1 of Massamá and which is part of the many mines that existed in the former.
Massamá is a former Portuguese parish, belonging to the municipality of Sintra, with an area of 2.78 km².
On July 26, 1997 the parish of Queluz was divided into 3 parishes and formed the city of Queluz, which includes the parishes of Massamá, Monte Abraão and Queluz. In 2013, in the context of the administrative reform was annexed to the parish of Monte Abraão, creating the Union of Parishes of Massamá and Monte Abraão.
