Gouveia is a mountain town in the Guarda district, situated on the western slope of the largest mountain system in Mainland Portugal, the Serra da Estrela, about 700 meters above sea level and has about 3472 inhabitants according to the latest censuses.

Gouveia has been inhabited by man since very remote times. There are traces of Castreja, Roman and Muslim civilizations, which have left their mark here. It was the scene of struggles between Christians and Muslims, which devastated it, still in ruins when King Sancho I tried to repopulate it in 1186.
