Canedo, Within its perimeter, there were formerly two Benedictine monasteries: one of nuns in the place of Mosteirô, then belonging to the parish of Várzea, founded in 897, and another of monks in the place of Monastery, founded in 950.
The mother church of the parish is located in the place of the monastery so called because there was a Monastery of Benedictine Nuns. This monastery already existed at the beginning of the monarchy and its foundation is attributed to D. Tello Guterres by the year 950. D. Dinis solemnly gave it to Bishop Geraldo, bishop of Porto, in 1304, with the obligation of him and his successors to sing a daily Mass in honor of God and Mary Most Holy, as well as for the soul of his father, his and his antecedents and successors. Three years later the bishop transferred the donation to the Titus of the See. In 1312 it was attached to the port deado for easier administration. Thus it was conserved until 1336, when the dean Domingos Martins refused the patronage of the Convent then reduced to three religious. As a result of this refusal, the Monastery was reduced to the Secular Rectory going the religious to the Convent of the port. The monastery and fence were sold at the time of the Philippes. There was a madhouse with its small fence, which was next to the main door of the Mother Church, which became the residence of the Rector. There is still the monastery building (minus the church) transformed into a private house preserving the name of "CASA DO MOSTEIRÔ". It is worth noting that in Canedo there is MONASTERY and MOSTEIRÔ, the one next to the Matrix and this near the Douro River. In each of these villages there was a Convent of Benedictine Nuns and both were later incorporated into those of the same Order in Porto. It is thought that Mosteirô's was still older than that of the Monastery. From Mosteirô there are no traces or traditions but its existence is certain because it consists of ancient documents.
