The metropolis of Lisbon
The metropolitan area of Lisbon is the economic, cultural and governmental center of Portugal. The metropolis covers an area of 3,015 square kilometers (for comparison, roughly twice the size of Gush Dan) and is home to approximately 3 million inhabitants, which make up approximately one third of Portugal’s population.
The metropolitan area of Lisbon consists of 18 sub-municipalities. 17 cities are located in the metropolitan area with 10 located in the North Bank and 7 in the South Bank beyond the Tagus River. The northern bank belongs to the Lisbon district while the southern bank belongs to the Stoval district. Also, 59 villages are located there.
The metropolis is not uniform in terms of the nature of the places. Among the cities and municipalities, there are more prestigious ones such as Qashqaiş or Estoril, more rural ones such as Sesimbra, middle-class ones such as Amadora, Loresh or Audiblas, touristic ones such as Lisbon or Sintra and so on.
In recent years, apartment prices in Lisbon have risen greatly. For the price of a one-room apartment in Lisbon, you can buy a villa or a very large apartment in a new project 20 minutes away by public transport from the city center. Thus more and more locals choose to live outside the city. Also, people are looking to live in less busy places without parking problems and with more peace and a green environment.
More and more locals are moving to cities, towns and villages outside of Lisbon and interesting investment opportunities are emerging all over the Lisbon metropolitan area. The rising demand for quality and affordable housing has meant that entrepreneurs and real estate companies have discovered the middle class and are launching more and more new projects.
